How I Got Hooked...

Dozens and dozens of strangers in a box – that is the best way to describe the collection of photos and other forms of memorabilia that I inherited from my Mom. My mother was the family historian, the genealogist, the photographer and the ultimate pack rat. The only problem… she wasn’t the most organized person in the world (even though she thought she was).

So there I was with scraps and notes of legible but not so understandable links of census records, unfinished family trees, and thousands of pictures – pictures of far too many people that I do not recognize or know how they are connected to me.

I’ll start piecing it together someday…

So one day my co-worker (let’s call him Bobby – that’s his name) invited me to a genealogy conference in Pasadena. Gotta start somewhere right? I attended couple of seminars and then I walked around with Bobby visiting all of the vendors. Wall Charts. Can’t wait to get our list on one of those things. Photo Restoration. Ooooh! That one was really exciting.

Then there – a few feet away from me there was this lady standing behind a table full of books. I love books but I was wondering what was so intriguing about these particular books? Then something else caught my eye. There was a display of little books with titles like I Remember When, A Tribute to Mom or Dad, and Lessons about Life. Then it hit me.

These books are about everyday people. But that wasn’t the best part. The lady started explaining Cherish Bound to me - but it was hard to pay attention to what she was saying. It kinda sounded like the teacher in the Charlie Brown specials. Waaa waa waa waa yada yada yada. Then I would ask her a question but then my mind started drifting. Cool. And while I was staring the lady kept asked me questions. But I couldn’t really hear her - I think I was too excited to really take in what she was saying.
